📖 Crypto glossary — essential terms

The most important words to understand tokens, DEXs and launches.

10 min read

Blockchain

Public ledger of transactions. On Solana, transactions are recorded on-chain and can be consulted through tools like Solscan.

SOL

The native currency of Solana. Used to pay network fees, swap, create pools and interact with dApps.

SPL Token

Token standard on Solana. The format used by wallets, DEXs and applications to recognize and manage tokens.

Wallet

Application that manages keys, assets and transactions. Phantom and Solflare are two popular examples on Solana.

Seed phrase

Secret phrase that controls the wallet. Never share it.

Mint address

Unique address of the token. It is the real on-chain identity of the token.

Supply

Total quantity of tokens created. Does not indicate the value of the project on its own.

Decimals

Indicate how many parts a token can be divided into. On Solana 9 decimals is standard.

Metadata

Visible token information: name, symbol, logo, description, links.

DEX

Decentralized exchange. Allows swapping tokens without a centralized exchange.

Liquidity pool

Reserve of two assets used to enable swaps. Example: TOKEN/SOL.

LP token

Token representing your share in a liquidity pool.

Slippage

Difference between expected price and final swap price. Increases when liquidity is low or the order is large.

Market cap

Token price multiplied by the considered supply. A useful metric, but must be read together with liquidity and volume.

Volume

Value traded in a certain period. Real volume indicates market activity.

Mint Authority

Permission to create new tokens. If active, supply can be increased.

Freeze Authority

Permission to freeze tokens in specific wallets. For memecoins often a sensitive signal.

Update Authority

Permission to modify metadata. Can be useful, but after launch can create doubts.

Rug pull

When those controlling the project remove liquidity or sell in a destructive way.

Non-custodial

Service that does not control user funds. The user signs transactions from their own wallet.

FOMO

Fear Of Missing Out. Often leads to buying without analysis.

FUD

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Can arise from real problems or community panic.

DYOR

Do Your Own Research. Means doing your own checks before buying or launching.
